June 1st was my three year anniversary at CHOICE, Inc. Within those three years, I'm not sure if Ken has ever missed his afternoon workout. Each afternoon around 2 or so you'll see Ken doing his daily push-ups and sit-ups. He usually does his age for each, so 41 push-ups and 41 sit-ups. EVERYDAY!! It doesn't matter if he had a tough day at a jobsite or the best day ever. No matter what the situation is, he always gets in his afternoon workout.


That is something I greatly admire about Ken. He never makes an excuse to not workout. His dedication to his afternoon workout is very admirable. We all have been in a situation where we've had a horrible day at work. The last thing that will be on your mind after you get off is to workout. You'd rather skip your workout and drive through your favorite fast food joint. Or you'll have a great day at work! Instead of going to workout, you decide that you'll hit happy hour to celebrate your day. Whatever the situation is we find excuses to get out of working out. Ken has never come up with an excuse to not work out. He knows that after he does it he feels better about himself, and he has made exercise part of his daily routine.


Here are 5 ways you can be more like Ken and make exercise a habit:

 

  1. 1. Start Small and Progress Later: You're in it for the long haul. You'll want to start out slow, especially if it has been a while since you've exercised regularly, to give your body time to build strength and endurance.
  2. 2. Accountability: Tell everyone you know about your exercise goals! Your friends and loved ones will be there to encourage you and perhaps even join you along the way.
  3. 3. Make exercise a priority: Most people barely get by with only 24 hours in a day, we get it! BUT when you make exercise a priority in your life, you will find that there IS time in the day, it's just that you're spending it doing other activities that are not serving your exercise goals.
  4. 4. Exercise first thing in the morning: If plan to exercise first thing in the morning, you are more likely to achieve your daily exercise goal. No matter how good your intentions may be, there are a billion things that may come up throughout the day that interfere with your exercise plans, whether it's an unforeseen errand, tiredness or fatigue, or you've simply had all day to talk yourself out of it. When you start first thing, you can avoid all of that!
  5. 5. Be kind to yourself: Reward yourself for all the work you've put in! When you acknowledge your progress you are able to build on your success and keep going! You'll also want to forgive yourself when you fall short. Rather than losing hope and giving up, forgive yourself and start fresh the next day. You can do this!
